On the TEDxMinneapolis stage: “Climate of Change.”

TEDxMinneapolis 2026 asked its speakers a single question: when conditions shift, do we resist or adapt? The event explored the climates we all live inside — emotional, social, professional, and cultural — and how change, met with resilience, is what moves us forward.

Katherine’s talk took that question straight into her own family. It begins in a hospital room 23 years ago, the moment she learned her newborn son Nicolas has Down syndrome, and turns on five words he said to her outside church two decades later: “Mom, can I download Tinder?” Nothing safe or supported existed for him, so she built it. Her talk makes the case that protection alone is not enough — that people deserve the skills, the respect, and the safer places to connect that let them choose love for themselves.

“No one should be forced to choose between safety and love.”

Also from the stage: “I had to stop standing in front of him and start standing beside him.” And: “Isolation is not safety.”

Meet the Speaker

Hi, I’m Katherine.

I’m a mom and stepmom to eight amazing young adults, four of whom have intellectual or developmental disabilities. Like so many of us, they dream of love, connection, and belonging. But when my son asked to join a dating app, I realized just how unsafe and unwelcoming the current system is for people like him.

That moment changed everything. I created Find Love Safely to offer a better way, rooted in safety, compassion, and real human connection.

Now, I speak to audiences across the country about what it means to build a more inclusive world — one where love, friendship, and dignity aren’t out of reach for anyone.

If you’re looking for a speaker who brings heart, purpose, and practical insight to every stage, I’d love to be part of your event.
